چکیده

DEVELOPMENT OF AN fMRI COMPATIBLE LOWER BODY NEGATIVE PRESSURE SYSTEM by Pratap Singh Kunwar The lower body negative pressure (LBNP) system provides a controlled, measured orthostatic stress to the cardiovascular system, which can be used with a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machine to study cardiovascular and cerebrovascular responses to graded LBNP. In the past, even though functional MRI (fMRI) was considered as one of the best modalities with which to measure small metabolic changes in the brain, it has not been used with an LBNP system to measure cerebrovascular changes. This was due to the lack of an fMRI compatible LBNP system. In this project, an fMRI compatible LBNP system was first constructed without using any ferromagnetic materials. The LBNP system was then tested to verify its compatibility with an MRI system. Concurrently, a software program was also developed for data acquisition and analysis. Using the developed software, an electrocardiogram (ECG) and measurements of blood pressure, heart rate, chamber pressure and blood flow in the brain were collected at 3 minutes each of 0, -10, -20, -30, -40 and -50 mm Hg lower body suction to confirm the accuracy and the reliability of the developed system. The measured heart rate increased and changes of blood flow in the brain decreased with the graded LBNP. The results of this pilot study support the literature. It has been demonstrated that this newly developed LBNP system is fMRI compatible, accurate, safe to use, reliable and can be used to study cardiovascular and cerebrovascular responses to graded LBNP. Cardiac pre-load alteration with MRI-compatible lower body suction device

Background Our group studies circulatory causes of exercise limitation in congenital heart patients with dilated right ventricle, but normal resting left ventricular ejection fraction. Cardiac MRI is the gold standard non-invasive tool for measuring heart chamber volume and blood vessel flow. We designed an MRI-compatible lower body negative pressure (LBNP) device (Image) in order to study the ...

Brain Activity Map Extraction from Multiple Sclerosis Patients Using Resting-State fMRI Data Based on Amplitude of Low Frequency Fluctuations and Regional Homogeneity Analysis

Introduction: Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is the most common non-traumatic neurological diseases of young adults. MS often reported during ages 20-62. MS affects the various anatomical parts of the central nervous system. Up to 65% of multiple sclerosis patients MS patients suffer from various problems, such as fatigue, depression, pain and sleep disorders. Unlike MRI, that only sh...

Brain Activity Map Extraction of Neuromyelitis Optica Patients Using Resting-State fMRI Data Based on Amplitude of Low Frequency Fluctuations and Regional Homogeneity Analysis

Introduction: Neuromyelitis Optica (NMO) is a rare inflammatory disease of the central nervous system which generally affecting the spinal cord and optic nerve. Damage to the optic nerve can result in the patient's dim vision or even blindness, while the spinal cord damage may lead to sensory and motor paralysis and the weakness of the lower limbs in the patient. Magnetic Reson...

fMRI-Compatible Robotic Interfaces with Fluidic Actuation

Resonance Imaging (fMRI) procedures, due to the high magnetic fields and limited space in the scanner. Fluidic actuators can be made fMRI-compatible and are, thus, promising solutions. In this work we developed two robotic interface devices, one with hydraulic and another with pneumatic actuation, to control one degree-of-freedom translational movements of a user that performs fMRI tasks. Due t...

An fMRI study of human visual cortex in response to spatiotemporal properties of visual stimuli

ABSTRACT  Background: The brain response to temporal frequencies (TF) has been already reported, but with no study reported for different TF with respect to various spatial frequencies (SF).  Materials and Methods: fMRI was performed by 1.5T GE-system in 14 volunteers during checkerboard, with TFs of 4, 6, 8 and 10Hz in low and high SFs of 0.5 and 8cpd.  Results: Average percentage BOLD signa...
